What Is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program providing financial support for essential dental services for eligible children aged 0–17 years. If your child qualifies, they can receive a range of dental treatments with no out-of-pocket cost for covered services at our Brisbane children’s dental clinic.

How Can I Find Out If My Child Qualifies?
The most straightforward way is to check your Medicare account, either online at my.gov.au or by calling the Medicare General Enquiries line on 132 011. Then contact Sandgate Bayside Dental and let us know your child qualifies. Alternatively, you can provide our friendly reception team with your Medicare card details and we will happily check for you.
We can then schedule an appointment for your child to discuss suitable treatment options based on their dental health. We will also discuss any associated costs of these services, which are bulk billed under the CDBS (limits apply), and you will need to sign a consent form before we provide any treatment.
What Is the Benefit Cap Under Medicare?
Under the CDBS, up to $1,158 can be claimed for each child over 2 consecutive calendar years. The 2-year period begins from your child’s first eligible dental service.
If the full $1,158 is not used in the first year, the balance rolls over to the next year as long as your child is still eligible.
If the full 2 years has passed and the $1,158 has not been used, it cannot be rolled over. You can however start a new 2-calendar-year period if your child remains eligible, meaning another $1,158 in benefits to claim over the next 2 years.
Some treatments are not covered, including orthodontic treatment (braces), cosmetic dentistry, and dental services provided in hospital.
How Do I Book My Child In for Dental Treatment Using CDBS?
1. Call Us
Call Sandgate Bayside Dental on 3269 2443. Advise the receptionist that your child is covered under the CDBS, and provide your Medicare card number.
2. Discuss Treatment
Discuss your child’s dental concerns, if any, with our dentist. They will advise you on the treatment costs and which treatment services are covered by the CDBS.
3. Consent Form
After you have been informed of the likely treatment and costs, a Patient Consent Form is completed by the patient or the patient’s parent/guardian regarding both the treatment and costs.
4. We Handle the Rest
As CDBS services are bulk billed, once you have provided your Medicare card number and established eligibility, you will be set up on our system and will not be required to do anything further.
How Can I Claim the Medicare CDBS Benefit After the Appointment?
CDBS services are bulk billed at Sandgate Bayside Dental, so nothing further is required on your part after establishing eligibility. Once you have provided your Medicare card number, the amount will be deducted from the benefit cap following the appointment.
