What happens if I don’t remove my wisdom teeth?

If wisdom teeth remain impacted or partially erupted, they can cause a range of problems over time. These include persistent pain and swelling, repeated infections around the gum flap (pericoronitis), decay in the wisdom tooth or the adjacent molar, cyst formation in the jawbone, and crowding or misalignment of your other teeth. How long is the recovery process?

Most patients feel significantly better within 3–5 days after a simple extraction. Surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth typically involves a recovery of 7–10 days before you feel back to normal, though complete healing of the gum and bone takes several weeks. Swelling is usually at its peak around day 2–3 and then gradually improves. Following your aftercare instructions carefully — particularly avoiding smoking, straws, and hard foods — makes the biggest difference to how quickly you recover. What foods can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?

For the first 24–48 hours, stick to soft, cool foods that require no chewing — think yogurt, smoothies, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, and soup (not too hot). From day 3 onwards you can gradually introduce softer solid foods as comfort allows. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods for at least a week, as these can irritate the extraction site or dislodge the healing blood clot. Also avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks in the first few days. What is a dry socket, and how can I prevent it?

A dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket is dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed, leaving the underlying bone and nerves exposed. It causes a distinctive throbbing, radiating pain that typically starts 2–4 days after the extraction. To reduce your risk: avoid smoking for at least 72 hours, don’t use straws, avoid vigorous rinsing on the first day, and steer clear of hard or crunchy foods. If you suspect a dry socket, call us promptly — it’s easily treated with a medicated dressing.
