What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal therapy is a highly effective procedure used to treat infected or damaged tooth pulp, preserving your natural tooth and preventing further complications. The nerve of the tooth is a very sensitive part and once decay reaches close to it, it doesn’t take long to get infected. The only way to save the tooth is then to perform an RCT on that tooth, or otherwise the tooth may have to be taken out. If you’re experiencing symptoms like severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swollen gums, it’s time to seek expert care.

Do I really need an RCT?

Most of the times before the tooth reaches this stage you will have some warning signs as in sensitivity to temperature or mild pain. It’s best to urgently see your dentist at that stage to help increase the chances of survival of the tooth.

Can I avoid an RCT?

  • Several dental issues like cavities do not cause any symptoms in the early stages hence it is advised to get your regular dental check ups done (mostly every 6 months) and also get X-rays done on your teeth (12 – 24 months depending upon your risk status as determined by your dentist).
  • There could be other reasons for your tooth needing an RCT, like cracks in the tooth or a previously placed big filling in your tooth which is already close to the nerve.
  • Getting regular check ups and X-rays and taking good care of your teeth is the best way to avoid needing an RCT.

What is the Root Canal Treatment Process?

  • An RCT is usually carried out in multiple visits (2-4 visits), though sometimes it may be performed start to finish in one visit.
  • You are numbed with a local anaesthetic first and following that a protective rubber dam sheet is placed on your tooth.
  • Any decay (rotted part of the tooth) is cleaned.
  • The nerve resides in the roots of your tooth which are cleaned by your dentist.
  • In between various stages of RCT some medicines (antibiotics) are placed inside the tooth to further aid in its cleaning.
  • At the final stage, a filling is packed in those empty channels followed by another filling to plug the cavity on top of the tooth.
  • A crown may be needed following the RCT to further strengthen the tooth.

How painful is the RCT?

Years ago, RCTs were considered awful and painful procedures. With technological advances RCTs have changed. As with any other dental procedure, you will need to be numbed. Once numbed, having an RCT is not much different than having a filling except that it takes longer. With decades of experience, our dentists are exceptionally gentle in performing RCTs.

Do I need to take time off after the treatment?

No. You will have some residual numbness following treatment which will wear away in a couple of hours. Also, in few cases there may be some post-operative discomfort, which can mostly be controlled with simple pain killer tablets.

Do you offer happy gas?

Yes, we do. Our patients can take advantage of our in-office nitrous oxide facility. There is a small cost of having happy gas. As setting up happy gas takes some time, we ask our patients to give us a heads up if they want to have happy gas for their treatment.

I can only pay a certain amount every fortnight/week. Do you offer any payment options?

We have proudly partnered with Denticare to offer you an interest free payment plan option. You pay a one time $39 as a set up fee and pay 20% deposit of the total amount of your payment plan. You can spread the payments to a value that you can comfortably pay every week/fortnight/month for 6-24 months. We also offer payment options like Afterpay and Zip pay, again at no extra charge to you.

Should I get my tooth taken out instead of getting an RCT?

You must discuss this with your dentist. Once your dentist has assessed your situation, he/she can guide you well. Mostly saving the tooth is preferred as having a gap will cause several problems with your remaining teeth. Cost and efforts in restoring a missing tooth should also be considered in making this decision. If your tooth is non restorable and too badly damaged, your dentist may advise you to get the tooth out instead.

If I get my tooth taken out instead, what are my options to get a new tooth?

The decision to get the desired treatment finally resides with you. Your dentist will guide you to make the best-informed decision. Restoration of teeth can be done with few options like dental implant, bridge or denture.

Who is an endodontist?

Though most of the RCTs can be performed comfortably by our dentists, at times, you may need to see a specialist to get a more complicated RCT performed. You would be referred by your dentist in that case to an Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist)

Do you have the latest equipment to perform the best quality treatment?

We have been around a long time and we believe in delivering state of the art technology to all our patients. We’re at the cutting edge of Queensland dentistry and we’re delighted to deliver world class services right here in our Sandgate dental practice.

We use the most advanced dental technology and treatment options available including Digital Radiographic Imaging, Rotary Endodontics, Apex locator, Warm compaction Obturation techniques and Intra-Oral Cameras.

I am absolutely terrified of the dentist. What can I do?

We are considered the gentle dentists of Brisbane. Our patients have tested us over time and have shown faith in us. But if you are really anxious/terrified, you have a few sedation options to choose from.

We offer nitrous oxide sedation (happy gas) in the surgery, which is quite helpful in calming your mind down so you can have the procedure done comfortably.

In our practice we can also organise treatment under IV sedation for you. This needs to be pre-planned and organised beforehand with our anaesthetist.

Is RCT safe for me?

RCT is a completely safe procedure. Read here to understand more

What happens if I ignore a root canal?

Ignoring an infected tooth can lead to severe pain, abscesses, and the eventual need for an extraction. Acting quickly can save your tooth and prevent further complications.
