How is gum disease managed in Sandgate?
Gum disease management depends entirely on the severity of the condition. Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible and is treated in our clinic through regular 6-monthly scale and polish appointments combined with excellent home care. If the disease progresses to advanced periodontitis, we diagnose the condition, provide ongoing active hygiene maintenance, and seamlessly refer you to a trusted local Periodontist (gum specialist) to ensure you receive the highest level of complex care.
If your gums bleed when brushing, feel swollen, or your teeth appear to be longer than they used to be, you may be experiencing the early signs of gum disease.
At Sandgate Bayside Dental, located at 74 Loudon Street, Sandgate QLD 4017, we believe that prevention is always better than a cure. Having served the Bayside community for over 30 years, our highly experienced clinicians know that regular, proactive hygiene visits are the absolute best way to protect your jawbone and preserve your natural teeth for life.
Whether you travel from Brighton, Shorncliffe, or right near the Sandgate train station, our team is here to help you regain control of your oral health before complex issues arise.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is incredibly common, yet it is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults in Australia. Because it is often completely painless in its early stages, many patients do not realize there is a problem until irreversible damage has occurred.
In our Sandgate clinic, bleeding gums are the most common early sign we diagnose during routine 6-monthly examinations. Healthy gums do not bleed. If you experience any of the following symptoms, it is time for a thorough assessment:
When evaluating your gum health, we classify the disease into two primary categories. Understanding the difference is critical to your treatment plan.
| Clinical Condition | What Is It? | Is It Reversible? | The Treatment Approach |
| Gingivitis | Surface-level inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup. No attachment loss has occurred. | Yes. The bone and connective tissues remain intact. | Routine 6-monthly scale and polish at our clinic, plus improved daily brushing and flossing. |
| Periodontitis | Deep, chronic infection that destroys the periodontal ligament and the jawbone holding your teeth. | No, but it is manageable. We can halt the active progression. | Frequent in-house hygiene maintenance combined with a referral to a Periodontist for specialist treatment. |

At Sandgate Bayside Dental, our primary goal is to catch gum disease before it reaches the irreversible stage. Here is how we proactively manage your periodontal health:
For patients with healthy gums or early-stage gingivitis, our standard preventative approach is highly effective. During your routine 6-monthly check-up, we perform a thorough, professional scale and polish. We carefully remove hardened calculus (tartar) and plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and gently polish the enamel. This prevents bacteria from irritating the gums and stops gingivitis in its tracks.
During your regular examinations, we don’t just look at your teeth; we closely monitor your gums. By measuring your periodontal pocket depths and looking for signs of attachment loss on your dental X-rays, we can diagnose periodontitis in its earliest stages, allowing us to act quickly.
If you have been diagnosed with periodontitis, standard 6-monthly visits are usually not enough. We will place you on a more frequent “active maintenance” schedule. This means seeing us for rigorous hygiene appointments every 3 to 4 months to clear away new calculus buildup and monitor the stability of your gums.
We are highly experienced in diagnosing periodontitis, but we also recognize when a condition requires specialized surgical intervention. If your gum disease is severe, aggressive, or not responding to standard maintenance, we will seamlessly refer you to a trusted local Periodontist (a dental specialist in gum disease). We then work closely with your specialist, co-managing your ongoing hygiene to ensure you receive the safest, most comprehensive care possible.

Many of our North Brisbane patients visit us to replace teeth they have already lost to severe periodontal disease.
Dental implants require stable, infection-free bone and gum tissue to integrate successfully. If you have active, untreated periodontitis, the same bacteria that destroyed your natural tooth will attack the titanium implant, leading to a condition called peri-implantitis and rapid implant failure.
At Sandgate Bayside Dental, our strict clinical priority is clearing your active infection and stabilizing your jawbone before we discuss tooth replacement.

Gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease) is 100% curable and reversible with a professional clean and excellent daily brushing and flossing. However, periodontitis (advanced gum disease) cannot be cured, as the bone loss is permanent. It can, however, be successfully managed and halted with clinical deep cleaning and ongoing periodontal maintenance.
No. For deep cleaning procedures (scaling and root planing), we use local anesthetic to completely numb the gums and teeth. You will feel pressure, but you should not feel pain. Your gums may be slightly tender for a day or two following the procedure, which can be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief.
This depends on the severity of the infection. Often, we divide scaling and root planing into two appointments (treating one half of the mouth per visit) to ensure your comfort and allow for adequate numbing. Each appointment typically takes between 45 to 60 minutes.
The cost varies based on the depth of the periodontal pockets and the number of teeth requiring treatment. During your initial assessment at Sandgate Bayside Dental, we will provide a fully transparent, itemized treatment plan with exact costs before any procedures begin.
Unfortunately, gums that have severely receded due to periodontitis will not naturally grow back on their own. The goal of our treatment is to stop further recession and bone loss. In severe cases of recession, a soft tissue graft may be recommended to cover exposed roots.
In most cases, physical removal of the calculus and bacteria through deep cleaning is enough to heal the gums. However, for aggressive forms of periodontitis or stubborn localized infections, we may prescribe topical antibiotics (placed directly into the gum pocket) or oral antibiotics to assist the healing process.
For over 30 years, our practice has been caring for people from Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Brighton, Deagon, Bracken Ridge, Boondall, Taigum, Woody Point, Clontarf, Margate, Redcliffe and other surrounding areas.
Our main priority is to provide affordable, gentle and quality dental care to the Sandgate and surrounding communities.
