Does Medicare Bulk Bill Emergency Dental Treatment?
Standard Medicare does not cover general dental treatment for adults — including emergency appointments for toothache, broken teeth, lost fillings, or dental abscesses. This applies regardless of income or concession card status.
There are two Medicare-related programs that do cover some dental treatment:
- Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) — for eligible children aged 2–17
- DVA Gold Card — for eligible veterans
For adults without private health insurance, we offer interest-free payment plans from $50/week to make emergency treatment accessible.
Free Emergency Dental for Children — CDBS
Eligible children aged 2–17 can receive emergency dental treatment at no out-of-pocket cost at Sandgate Bayside Dental under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
The CDBS provides up to $1,158 in benefits over two consecutive calendar years. Covered emergency treatments include:

We process HICAPS claims immediately for all major health funds including Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, TUH and Westfund. As a preferred provider with these funds, our patients receive higher rebates than at non-preferred practices.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency after hours?
If you have a dental emergency outside opening hours, call 3269 2443 and leave a message. For severe swelling affecting your airway or breathing, go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately. For knocked-out teeth, store the tooth in milk and call us first thing when we open.
Can I use Afterpay or Zip for emergency dental treatment?
Yes. Sandgate Bayside Dental accepts Afterpay and Zip for on-the-day treatment costs, and Humm and Denticare for larger treatment plans. Interest-free payment plans start from $50 per week.
