Tooth Extraction Brisbane | Sedation for Nervous Patients

Tooth Extraction in Brisbane
Written and clinically reviewed by Dr Vikram Bansal BDS — Last reviewed: June 2026
Having a tooth removed is something most people would rather avoid, and that’s exactly how we approach it too — extraction is always a last resort, only recommended when a tooth genuinely can’t be saved. When it is the right call, our focus is on making the experience as calm and straightforward as possible, including sedation options for patients who feel anxious and same-day appointments for emergencies. Sandgate Bayside Dental has looked after North Brisbane families since 1992, and we handle assessment, removal and aftercare all in one place.
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth usually only needs removing when it’s beyond repair or causing harm to the teeth around it. The common reasons are severe decay that’s reached the point of no return, infection that can’t be resolved, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, a tooth that’s cracked or broken below the gum line, crowding that needs space created for orthodontic treatment, or an impacted wisdom tooth. If your situation involves wisdom teeth specifically, see our dedicated guide to wisdom teeth removal — the approach and recovery are slightly different.
First, we’ll try to save the tooth
Before recommending removal, we look at whether the tooth can be kept. In many cases a root canal can save a badly decayed or infected tooth that might otherwise need to come out — keeping your natural tooth is almost always the better long-term outcome. We’ll talk you through the trade-offs honestly, including when root canal treatment is the smarter choice, so you can make the call with full information. If extraction really is the best option, we’ll explain why.
Sedation options for nervous patients
Anxiety about having a tooth out is common, and it shouldn’t stop you getting the care you need. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel the extraction itself. For patients who feel particularly anxious, or for more complex surgical removals, IV sedation is available — it leaves you deeply relaxed and with little memory of the procedure. Sedation is arranged before your appointment and requires a pre-consultation and a medical assessment first; it’s delivered by a dedicated sedationist working alongside Dr Vikram Bansal, so your treatment and your sedation are handled by separate, focused clinicians. You can read more on our dental sedation in Brisbane page.
Emergency and same-day tooth extraction
If you’re in significant pain, have a badly broken tooth or facial swelling, don’t wait it out. We keep time aside for urgent cases and can often arrange a same-day appointment. Call us as early in the day as you can, and in the meantime our pages on emergency dental care in North Brisbane and sudden tooth pain explain what to do while you’re on your way.
What happens on the day
We start by numbing the area thoroughly with local anaesthetic. A simple extraction — where the tooth is fully visible — is usually quick and gentle. A surgical extraction, for a tooth that’s broken at the gum line or impacted, takes a little longer and may involve a small incision and a stitch or two. Either way, our team talks you through each step so nothing comes as a surprise, and we work at a pace you’re comfortable with.
Aftercare: recovering from a tooth extraction
Good aftercare makes for a smoother recovery, and we’ll send you home with written instructions. The essentials:
The first 24–48 hours
Rest and avoid strenuous activity. Use a cold pack on the cheek to ease swelling and bruising, which are normal and usually peak around the second day before settling.
Eating and pain relief
Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days and avoid hot, spicy or hard foods near the site. Simple over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough; follow any specific advice we give you.
Protecting the healing site
Don’t rinse vigorously on the first day. After that, gentle warm salt-water rinses help keep the area clean. To avoid dry socket, don’t smoke or drink through a straw for the first 48–72 hours, as this can dislodge the healing clot. Call us on 3269 2443 if bleeding won’t settle, pain worsens after day three, or you develop a fever.
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Brisbane?
The cost depends on whether it’s a simple or surgical extraction and whether you choose sedation, so we provide a written quote after assessing the tooth — no surprises. Eligible children and teenagers may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (up to $1,158 in 2026), payment plans are available from $50 per week, and we’ll process any private health fund rebates you’re entitled to.

Frequently asked questions
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel the extraction itself. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal as you heal, and that’s well managed with simple pain relief. Anxious patients can also choose sedation.
Can I be sedated for a tooth extraction?
Yes. IV sedation is available for anxious patients and complex surgical extractions. It’s arranged in advance and requires a pre-consultation and a medical assessment.
How long does it take to recover?
Most people take it easy for the first 24–48 hours, with swelling settling over the first week. You can usually return to your normal routine within a few days.
Can you do emergency same-day extractions?
Often, yes, when it’s clinically appropriate. We keep time aside for urgent cases — call early in the day so we can fit you in.
