Sedation for Dental Implants Brisbane

Sedation for Dental Implants in Brisbane — Sleep Through Your Procedure

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off replacing missing teeth — and one of the most common reasons implant treatment never happens at all. At Sandgate Bayside Dental, we offer both IV sedation and oral sedation for dental implant procedures, so fear doesn’t have to stand between you and a permanent, natural-looking smile.

Under sedation, you are deeply relaxed and largely unaware throughout the entire appointment. Many patients are genuinely surprised by how little they remember — and how comfortable the experience was. Dr Vikram Bansal performs implant placement alongside our dedicated sedationist, and our team is experienced in caring for anxious patients at every stage of treatment.

Why Do Patients Choose Sedation for Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure. While it is performed under local anaesthetic — meaning you feel pressure but not pain — some patients find the experience of being awake during surgery distressing, even when there is no physical discomfort. Others have a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for extended appointments, or a history of traumatic dental experiences.

Common reasons patients choose sedation for implant procedures include:

Dental anxiety or phobia
Fear of dental treatment, especially surgery or injections.

Strong gag reflex
Makes dental procedures difficult or distressing to tolerate.

Previous traumatic experiences
Past difficult dental appointments that have left lasting anxiety.

Long appointment duration
Multiple implants placed in a single session benefit from sedation.

Sensitivity to sounds and sensations
Heightened awareness makes surgical procedures overwhelming.

Years of avoided treatment
Sedation removes the barrier for patients who have delayed care.

Choosing sedation does not affect the quality or outcome of your implant treatment. The procedure is exactly the same — sedation simply removes the fear barrier so you can access treatment you may have been avoiding for years.

Sedation Options for Dental Implants at Sandgate Bayside Dental

We offer two sedation options for implant procedures, depending on your level of anxiety, medical history, and treatment complexity.

IV Sedation (Intravenous / Twilight Sedation)

IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream through a small cannula, usually placed in the back of your hand. It takes effect within seconds and produces a state of deep relaxation where you are conscious but largely unaware of your surroundings.

Most patients under IV sedation have little to no memory of the procedure afterwards. You remain able to respond to instructions during treatment, but will feel deeply calm and detached from what is happening around you.

Onset Within seconds of administration
Depth Deep relaxation — most patients remember very little
Best suited for Moderate to severe dental anxiety
Pre-consult required Yes — medical assessment required beforehand
Driver required Yes — responsible adult to take you home

Oral Sedation (Sedative Tablet)

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative tablet before your appointment, usually around an hour beforehand. It produces a state of calm and drowsiness that makes the procedure feel slightly less overwhelming, without the need for an intravenous line.

Oral sedation is a good option for patients with mild dental anxiety who want to feel more relaxed without the deeper sedation that IV provides. You will still be conscious and able to communicate throughout your appointment.

Onset Approximately 1 hour after taking the tablet
Depth Calm and drowsy — still conscious throughout
Best suited for Mild dental anxiety
Pre-consult required Yes — prescription and medical review required with your GP
Driver required Yes — responsible adult to take you home

What to Expect: Your Sedated Implant Appointment

Here is how a typical sedated implant appointment works at our Sandgate clinic:

1

Pre-consultation and medical assessment

You attend a pre-consultation with Dr Vikram Bansal and our dedicated sedationist. Your medical history, current medications, and general health are reviewed to confirm sedation is safe and appropriate. Fasting instructions and pre-appointment guidelines are provided at this stage.

2

Arrival and sedation administration

You arrive at the clinic with your designated driver. Our sedationist meets with you before the procedure begins. For IV sedation, a small cannula is placed and sedation begins within seconds. For oral sedation patient takes a tablet and there’s no role of sedationist.

3

Implant placement

Dr Vikram Bansal performs the implant procedure using our in-house 3D CBCT imaging for precision guidance, while our sedationist monitors your IV sedation and wellbeing throughout. Local anaesthetic is also used — there is no physical discomfort. Most patients are completely unaware of the procedure.

4

Recovery and discharge

After the procedure you rest in the clinic until the sedation begins to wear off. Your responsible adult collects you and takes you home. You should rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Sedation is not required for dental implant procedures — many patients are comfortable with local anaesthetic alone. But if any of the following apply to you, sedation is worth discussing at your consultation:

  • You have avoided dental treatment for years because of fear
  • You feel panicky or distressed at the thought of dental surgery
  • You have had a difficult experience with dental treatment in the past
  • You know you need implants but keep putting off making an appointment
  • You have a strong gag reflex that makes dental treatment difficult
  • You are having multiple implants placed in one appointment

Important — please note

Sedation for implant procedures requires pre-booking and a separate pre-consultation appointment. It cannot be arranged on the day. If sedation is important to you, please mention this when booking your initial consultation so we can allow the appropriate time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to be sedated for dental implants?

No — sedation is not required. Dental implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic, which means you feel pressure but not pain. However, many patients choose sedation to manage anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or simply to feel more comfortable during a surgical procedure. Both IV sedation and oral sedation are available at Sandgate Bayside Dental.

Is IV sedation safe for dental implant surgery?

Yes, when administered following a thorough pre-consultation and medical assessment. At Sandgate Bayside Dental, IV sedation is administered by our dedicated sedationist, working alongside Dr Vikram Bansal. Your medical history, current medications and general health are reviewed before any sedated procedure, and your vital signs are monitored throughout.

Will I be unconscious under IV sedation?

No. IV sedation produces a state of deep relaxation where you are conscious but largely unaware of your surroundings. You can still respond to instructions during the procedure. Most patients have little to no memory of the appointment afterwards, which many find reassuring. IV sedation is not the same as general anaesthesia.

How much does sedation add to the cost of dental implants?

Sedation is an additional cost on top of the implant procedure. The exact amount depends on the type of sedation and the length of the appointment. At Sandgate Bayside Dental, implants start from $4,200 per implant. Sedation costs are discussed with you by our sedationist over the phone, soon after your initial consultation. Payment plans from $50 per week are available through Afterpay, Zip, Humm and Denticare.

Can I book sedation on the day of my implant procedure?

No. Sedation requires pre-booking and a separate pre-consultation appointment to review your medical history and confirm suitability. It cannot be arranged on the day. If sedation is important to you, please mention this when booking your initial consultation.

What is the difference between IV sedation and oral sedation for implants?

IV sedation is administered into the bloodstream and takes effect within seconds, producing deep relaxation with little memory of the procedure. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet approximately one hour before the appointment, producing calm and drowsiness but without the same depth. IV sedation suits moderate to severe anxiety; oral sedation suits mild anxiety. Your pre-consultation determines which is right for you.

Do I need someone to drive me home after a sedated implant procedure?

Yes. For both IV and oral sedation you must have a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for 24 hours after sedation. This requirement is non-negotiable for patient safety and your appointment cannot proceed without this arranged in advance.

I have been avoiding implants for years because of fear. Where do I start?

The best first step is a no-pressure consultation with Dr Vikram Bansal and our team. You can discuss your concerns openly, ask any questions, and learn about your sedation options before committing to anything. Many patients find that simply having a conversation — without any treatment happening — is enough to feel ready to move forward.
