Oral sedation (sedative tablet)
A prescribed sedative tablet taken about an hour before the appointment. It produces calm and drowsiness so the procedure feels less overwhelming, without an intravenous line. What Happens at a Sedated Implant Appointment?
1. Pre-consultation and medical assessment
You meet Dr Vikram Bansal and, for IV sedation, the sedationist. Medical history, current medications and general health are reviewed to confirm sedation is suitable, and you receive fasting and pre-appointment instructions.
2. Arrival and sedation
You arrive with your designated driver. For IV sedation the sedationist places a small cannula and sedation begins within seconds. For oral sedation you will have taken the tablet about an hour beforehand, and the sedationist is not involved.
3. Implant placement
Dr Bansal places the implants using the in-practice 3D CBCT imaging taken at planning. Local anaesthetic is used as well, and under IV sedation the sedationist monitors your breathing, heart rate and oxygen levels throughout.
4. Recovery and discharge
You rest at the practice until the sedation begins to wear off, then your responsible adult takes you home. Rest for the remainder of the day; most people return to normal activities the following day.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Sedation is not required for implants, and many patients are comfortable with local anaesthetic alone. It is worth discussing at your consultation if any of the following apply:
